Any home that is designed with sustainability in mind can be considered an eco home, but there are still certain architectural styles and models that have been trending within this sector of the real estate industry.

These are five of the most common types of eco-friendly homes:

Prefab Homes

Commonly referred to as prefab homes, prefabricated houses are one of the most popular types of eco-friendly homes. Prefabricated homes are constructed in pieces in a factory, and are assembled on-site for the homeowner. Given the fact that a specific design and model is used to create a prefabricated home, there is minimal material waste. In addition, prefab manufacturers are relying more heavily on sustainable building materials for the construction of their homes. Prefab homes are a viable eco-friendly option for homeowners of all budgets, as they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Tiny Homes

While other eco-friendly homes may blend in perfectly with their more traditional counterparts, tiny homes stand out in a crowd. This is due to the fact that these homes are quite literally very tiny. With minimal square footage (sometimes as little as 200 or 300 square feet) these homes are ideal for people who are truly dedicated to living a sustainable lifestyle. Tiny homes use fewer materials during construction and less energy on a daily basis. They are often made of eco-friendly materials as well. Tiny homes are perhaps the most affordable option in the eco home niche.

Natural Light Homes

Natural light homes are designed in a way that allows maximum access to sunlight throughout the day. The hallmark feature of these homes is windows, and sometimes entire walls of glass. Natural light homes are thoughtfully constructed and are situated on the lot in order to capture the most sunlight during the day. They are ideal for people who live in colder climates and who do not want to rely heavily on their heating system in order to stay warm.

Solar Homes

Solar homes are a form of eco-friendly home that prioritizes the use of solar energy in the design. Solar homes almost always automatically include solar panels on the roof, but they also may have additional light sources, such as large windows. Homeowners who are interested in a solar home will want to consider their location, as significant daylight is needed in order to fully rely on solar power.

Zero Carbon Homes

Zero carbon homes are designed with one specific goal in mind: to eliminate all carbon waste and to result in zero carbon emissions. Zero carbon homes rely exclusively on renewable resources for power, and they often incorporate state-of-the-art technology into their design. These types of homes are often preferred by luxury home buyers.

If you are interested in adopting a sustainable lifestyle, then an eco-friendly home may be the best choice for you. You can work with a builder who specializes in green new home construction to select a style that works for your personal needs and preferences. Or, you can implement upgrades and changes into your existing home in order to reduce the energy you use on a daily basis and take advantage of renewable resources.
